Steve Sabella (1975 Gerusalemme, Palestina. Vive e lavora a Berlino) è un artista che utilizza la fotografia e l’installazione fotografica come suo principale mezzo espressivo.
Le sue mostre personali nel 2014 comprendono: Fragments presso Berloni Gallery di Londra, Layers presso Contemporary Art Platform (CAP), Kuwait, Archaeology of the Future presso il Centro Internazionale di Fotografia Scavi Scaligeri di Verona e Independence presso Meem Gallery a Dubai. Hatie Kantz pubblica la prima monografia dell’artista Steve Sabella Photography 1997-2014 in collaborazione con la Akademie der Künste di Berlino, con testi di Hubertus von Amelunxen e Kamal Boullata.
Nel 1997 ha completato il triennio in arte fotografica presso la Musrara School of Photography a Gerusalemme. Nel 2007 si è laureato in Visual Studies presso l’Empire State College of the State University of New York. Nel 2008, grazie ad una borsa di studio, ha completato un master in Photographic Studies all’ University of Westminster, guadagnandosi il premio Caparo Award of Distinction e, grazie al Saïd Foundation Scholarship, ha conseguito il suo secondo master in Art Business nel 2009 presso il Sotheby’s Institute of Art.
Nel 2002 Sabella è stato uno dei vincitori del A. M. Qattan Foundation’s Young Artist of the Year Award. Nel 2008 il suo lavoro è stato selezionato ed esposto a Londra per il premio Independent Photographers Terry O’Neil e ha ricevuto dalla Akademie der Künste di Berlino il premio Ellen Auerbach , che prevedeva, tra l’altro, la pubblicazione della sua monografia avvenuta poi nel 2014.
Dalla fine degli anni ’90 fino al 2007 Sabella ha risieduto a Gerusalemme ed ha esposto all’estero così come in tutta la Palestina, comprendendo undici personali.
E’ stato uno degli artisti a cui è stato commissionato un lavoro per la Istanbul Collection, donata all’ Ars Aevi Museum of Contemporary Art a Sarajevo.
Nel 2009 è stato uno degli artisti convocati per l’inaugurazione di Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art a Doha (Qatar), dove ha presentato l’installazione Settlement Six Israelis & One Palestinian.
Nel 2013 Il suo lavoro è stato incluso nella mostra Keep Your Eye on the Wall, parte de Les Rencontres d’Arles Photographie ed ha partecipato alla biennale di fotografia Fotofest 2014 a Houston (USA) nella mostra View from Inside.
Nel 2014 è stato inoltre invitato dal Bahrain National Museum, dove ha presentato la sua serie fotografica Sinopia come parte della mostra itinerante Recreational Purpose.
Il suo lavoro fa parte delle collezioni di British Museum, London; Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha; Contemporary Art Platform, Kuwait; Ars Aevi Museum of Contemporary Art, Sarajevo; Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah; Cuadro Fine Art Gallery, Dubai; Salsali Private Museum, Dubai; Samawi Collection, Dubai e in diverse collezioni private.
Sabella ha tenuto conferenze e presentazioni presso varie istituzioni, tra cui University of Cambridge; Università di Torino; School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London; University of East London; Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti di Torino; Contemporary Art Platform, Kuwait; University of Rostock; Akademie der Künste, Berlin; British Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas.
Tra i diversi documentari per la TV e cortometraggi sul suo lavoro ci sono: Jerusalem in Exile’ and ‘Kan Yama Kan’, due episodi contenuti nel progetto Beyond Blue & Gray di Eyes Infinite Films (2005 and 2006); Europe Through Their Eyes a cura di Ma’an TV Productions (2010); Artist of the Month, trasmesso su Ikono MENASA (2011); Artist of the Month su IkonoTV (2013); Arts InSight: Who is Steve Sabella? prodotto da Ernie Manouse (2014); e In the Darkroom with Steve Sabella di Nadia J. Kabalan (2014). E’ stato anche oratore invitato a TEDx Marrakech (2012).
Sabella ha pubblicato numerosi saggi ed articoli, inclusi diversi come collaboratore fisso per la rivista Contemporary Practices, come: “Palestinian Conceptual Art, Emily Jacir Shifting to an Art that Engages the Mind of the Viewer” (2009), “Is the United Arab Emirates Constructing its Art History? The Mechanisms that Confer Value to Art” (2009), “‘Valued’ in the ‘West’ Sold in the ‘East’” (2010), “Reconsidering the Value of Palestinian Art & Its Journey to the Art Market” (Part 1, 2010; Part 2, 2011), “The Business of Looking” (2011), “The Colonization of the Imagination” (2012) and “Archaeology of the Future” (2014).
Il suo articolo “Hostage” (2014) è stato pubblicato da Phaidon in “From Galilee to Negev” di Stephen Shore, ed è di prossima pubblicazione la sua autobiografia, intitolata “The Artist’s Curse”.
