metroquadro gallery in Turin presents EveryDay, a solo exhibition by the artist Jean Paul Charles. An intense exhibition path that focuses on the theme of the mountain, interpreted both as a monumental daily presence and as a fragile symbol of a planet threatened by global warming.
It is an exhibition profoundly centered on painting, which, however, can no longer eschew a confrontation with the digital medium. EveryDay is a work composed of 365 small paintings that, when assembled, recall the photo gallery of our smartphones. In the larger-scale works, the artist utilizes a play of light on fields of shadow — evoked by the bitumen and the black glass of digital devices — to investigate the mystery of life and creation. It is a profound balance, today endangered by our economic model and the resulting global warming. The great mountain in the work Paysage is its symbol: the portrait of a glacier that once was and is now vanishing.
Jean Paul Charles is a contemporary artist of French origin, who has always accompanied his art with an intense propensity for physical activity (10 years in the elite corps of the French army and an athlete on the French national track and field team). In 2013, he participated in the Turin Marathon with a performance, completing it in four hours and creating four works along the route. Long fascinated by the dialogue between the natural environment and the digital dimension, Charles lives and works in the mountains, a context that constantly nourishes his visual poetics. His research ranges from painting to mixed-media experimentation — with a celebrated use of bitumen to recall the technological displays of contemporary life — distinguishing itself through a strong lyrical charge combined with a deep sensitivity toward ecological urgencies.
from the text by Roberto Mastroianni:
“Ultimately, Jean-Paul Charles is not only a painter, but a researcher who uses vision, color, gesture, and mark as tools of philosophical, aesthetic, and spiritual inquiry, and for this reason his practice can be ascribed to the post-conceptual field of contemporary art. The Everyday project represents the culmination of this research: a perfect synthesis between the eruption of physical gesture and the phenomenological transparency of the invisible. To possess or observe a work by the artist means accepting a challenge: that of returning to look at the world not as a flat image on a smartphone, but as living, pulsating matter that is, despite everything, still full of wonder. Charles reminds us that beauty does not reside in the exceptional, in the forms of transcendence, but in the everyday in which the real emerges from a network of immanent and invisible relationships, tensions, and forces. His painting is a bridge between earth and sky, built with the dust and light of our daily lives, an invitation to remain human in the unstoppable flow of time, favoring duration over mechanical time, appropriating the perception of self and world that can lead to experiencing time and space as a musical score of existential character.”
